Okafor’s Late Strike Seals Leeds Win Over Tottenham
Leeds United beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Elland Road, with substitute Noah Okafor scoring in the 79th minute from Harry Wilson’s assist. Tottenham had 61% possession, but Leeds created the clearer volume of opportunities and finished with a clean sheet.
The decisive moment
Leeds United claimed a 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road, breaking a goalless deadlock with 11 minutes of normal time remaining. Noah Okafor, introduced in the 77th minute, struck two minutes later with a right-footed finish from Harry Wilson’s assist.
It was the only goal of the contest and the only score of the second half. Neither side found a breakthrough before the interval, despite a match that included early VAR activity: a Leeds penalty check in the fifth minute and a further VAR review recorded in the 35th minute.
Leeds make their openings count
Tottenham controlled more of the ball, recording 61% possession and completing 420 of 508 passes. They also registered more attacks, 101 to Leeds’ 88, and more dangerous attacks, 58 to 41.
But Leeds carried the stronger statistical threat in front of goal. The home side produced 16 shots to Tottenham’s seven, with both teams registering four efforts on target. Leeds also created four big chances compared with one for Spurs, though they missed three of those big chances. Their six corners also exceeded Tottenham’s four.
The eventual winner came shortly after Leeds made a double change in the 77th minute. Wilson entered alongside Okafor, and the pair combined immediately: Wilson supplied the assist and Okafor finished in the 79th minute. Okafor was booked a minute later for unsporting conduct, but his intervention had already given Leeds the lead that decided the match.
Defensive resolve and a clean sheet
The home team’s work without the ball was reflected in several of the final numbers. Leeds won 59 duels, compared with Tottenham’s 43, made 22 tackles to Spurs’ 15, and recorded 11 interceptions to Tottenham’s four. James Trafford made four saves as Leeds preserved the clean sheet.
Leeds also blocked four shots, while Tottenham recorded none. Tottenham’s possession did produce four shots on target, but it did not produce a goal. Leeds’ ability to keep the scoreline intact after going ahead was reinforced by late substitutions in the 90th minute, when Ilia Gruev and Joe Rodon replaced Sean Longstaff and Jayden Bogle.
Changes shape the closing stages
Both teams used five substitutions. Tottenham made the first change before half-time, bringing Dominic Solanke on for Mathys Tel in the 43rd minute. Further Spurs changes followed in the 65th minute, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher and Dejan Kulusevski introduced, before Lucá Williams-Barnett entered in the 83rd minute.
For Leeds, Melvin Bard came on for Gabriel Gudmundsson at the start of the second half. The late introductions of Wilson and Okafor proved decisive on the scoreboard.
The match carried a competitive edge, with Leeds receiving two yellow cards and Tottenham three. Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Sandro Tonali were booked for Spurs, while Sean Longstaff and goalscorer Okafor were cautioned for Leeds.
Standout ratings
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was named Player of the Match with a rating of 7.49. Leeds also had strong ratings from Tarik Muharemović (7.33), goalkeeper James Trafford (7.31), and Okafor and Jayden Bogle (both 7.25).
For Tottenham, Jan Paul van Hecke received a 7.46 rating, while substitute Solanke was rated 7.11. Yet the defining return belonged to Leeds: one late goal, a clean sheet and all three points at Elland Road.
