Ødegaard’s Late Strike Gives Arsenal 1-0 Win Over Hull City

Match overview

Arsenal claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Hull City at Emirates Stadium in round 10 of the Premier League season. Martin Ødegaard supplied the decisive moment in the 72nd minute, scoring with his right foot to settle a contest that had remained level through a goalless first half.

The result reflected Arsenal’s sustained control of the ball and territory, although Hull made the hosts work until the closing stages. Arsenal finished with 67% possession, 110 attacks and 81 dangerous attacks, compared with Hull’s 33% possession, 77 attacks and 31 dangerous attacks.

A first half without a breakthrough

Arsenal began in a 4-2-3-1 shape, while Hull set up in a 5-3-2. The home side had the greater share of play throughout, completing 490 of 569 passes at an 86% success rate. Hull completed 190 of 272 at 70%.

The most significant first-half flashpoint arrived late in the half. A penalty decision in Arsenal’s favour was reviewed by VAR in the 42nd minute, before the penalty was cancelled a minute later. The game therefore remained 0-0 at the interval.

Hull’s defensive workload was substantial. They recorded 11 interceptions, 15 tackles and 71 clearances from danger, while goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was later named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.4.

Arsenal finally find the goal

The pattern continued after the restart, with Arsenal continuing to build pressure. The hosts made a double change in the 63rd minute, bringing on Viktor Gyökeres for Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino for Declan Rice. Eberechi Eze then replaced Christos Tzolis in the 69th minute, with Piero Hincapié also entering for Riccardo Calafiori.

The breakthrough came three minutes later. Ødegaard struck with his right foot in the 72nd minute for the only goal of the game, turning Arsenal’s statistical advantage into the winning margin.

Arsenal finished with 21 shots to Hull’s seven and put 10 efforts on target, compared with two from the visitors. They also created the match’s only recorded big chance, won 52 duels to Hull’s 33, and had 17 key passes against Hull’s five. The seven corners to four further underlined the pressure Arsenal maintained.

Hull responded with further changes after conceding, but the final score did not move. Arsenal introduced Martín Zubimendi for Bruno Guimarães in the 89th minute as they saw out the one-goal lead.

Defensive resistance, attacking control

Hull’s defensive effort was a clear feature of the match. Tzolakis’s Player of the Match rating led all players, while Semi Ajayi received a 7.65 rating. The visitors also registered nine saves as a team, helping keep the deficit to one goal despite Arsenal’s volume of attempts.

For Arsenal, Noni Madueke was their highest-rated player at 8.14, followed by Ødegaard at 7.97. Ezri Konsa scored 7.60, while David Raya made two saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The disciplinary count also leaned heavily towards Hull, who committed 15 fouls to Arsenal’s six and received five yellow cards. Arsenal finished without a booking.

Final word

Arsenal had to remain patient, but their control was consistent across possession, passing, attacking volume and shots on target. Ødegaard’s 72nd-minute finish provided the difference, while Hull’s resilience — led by Tzolakis — ensured the contest remained in the balance for much of the afternoon.
