The result

Manchester City claimed a 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena in round four of the Champions League League Stage. City led 1-0 at half-time, Leipzig fought back twice after the interval, but the visitors found the decisive fifth goal through Erling Haaland in the 78th minute.

It was a match with momentum shifts and sustained attacking output from both sides. City had 65% possession and completed 611 of 676 passes, while Leipzig remained a persistent threat, producing 14 shots and six on target.

First-half advantage

The opening half ended with City ahead through a 37th-minute own goal by Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. Leipzig had already collected two yellow cards by that point, with Christoph Baumgartner booked in the 17th minute and Ridle Baku in the 33rd.

The scoreline remained 0-1 at the break, but the second half quickly changed the tone of the contest.

Leipzig respond, City answer

Baku brought Leipzig level in the 49th minute with a right-footed finish, assisted by Brajan Gruda. The equaliser came shortly after Leipzig’s third booking, shown to Neil El Aynaoui in the 48th minute.

City restored their lead at 58 minutes. Enzo Fernández headed in from an Iliman Ndiaye assist to make it 2-1. Leipzig responded again only three minutes later: Antonio Nusa converted with his left foot, with Christopher Nkunku providing the assist, to level the match at 2-2.

That sequence underlined the competitive balance of the second half. Leipzig created two big chances and City five across the match; both teams also struck the woodwork once.

Haaland settles it

The winning moment arrived in the 78th minute. Haaland finished with his left foot after an assist from Elliot Anderson, putting City 3-2 ahead. It was Haaland’s goal that separated the sides at full-time.

City then made late changes, introducing Rúben Dias in the 79th minute and Ayyoub Bouaddi, Allan and Mateo Kovačić in the 83rd. Jérémy Doku, who had replaced Phil Foden in the 64th minute, was booked for time wasting in the 88th minute. Abdukodir Khusanov received a further City yellow card in stoppage time.

The numbers

City controlled more of the ball and the overall volume of play, recording 112 attacks to Leipzig’s 71, 55 dangerous attacks to 40, and 55 duels won to 33. They also completed 12 successful dribbles, compared with Leipzig’s six, and had a 90% pass-completion rate.

Leipzig, however, were not short of attacking presence. They registered 14 total shots to City’s 12, had more shots on target (six to five), earned five corners to City’s three, and made 11 key passes to City’s eight. Ten of Leipzig’s 14 shots came from inside the box, while City had 12 from that area.

The foul count reflected a more disrupted evening for the home side: Leipzig committed 20 fouls and received four yellow cards, while City committed seven fouls and received two bookings.

Standout performers

Anderson was named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.18 and supplied the assist for Haaland’s winner. Fernández scored City’s second goal and recorded a 7.67 rating. For Leipzig, Nusa was the home side’s highest-rated player at 7.60 after his 61st-minute equaliser.

City leave Leipzig with the three points after a closely contested match in which Leipzig twice drew level, but could not find a third response to Haaland’s late finish.
