Lazio 2-1 Cagliari: Pinamonti’s late header seals Olimpico comeback

Match report

Lazio came from behind to claim a 2-1 Serie A victory over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The home side had the greater share of the ball and the broader attacking volume, but needed a late intervention from substitute Andrea Pinamonti to turn an evenly poised contest into three points.

Cagliari struck first in the 20th minute. M’Bala Nzola finished with his left foot after an assist from Alieu Fadera, putting the visitors 1-0 ahead. Lazio found their response before the interval: Gustav Isaksen also scored with his left foot in the 36th minute, with Tijjani Noslin providing the assist.

The sides went into the break level at 1-1, and the match remained undecided deep into the second half. Lazio made a triple change in the 55th minute, introducing Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Alfonso Pedraza and Pinamonti. Those changes proved decisive late on.

The decisive moment

Pinamonti had been on the pitch for 28 minutes when he delivered the winner. In the 83rd minute, the forward headed home Pedraza’s assist to make it 2-1. It was Pinamonti’s first recorded goal contribution of the match after replacing Mattia Zaccagni, while Pedraza marked his appearance off the bench with the key pass for the decisive goal.

The final stages also brought further disciplinary pressure on Cagliari. Adam Obert, who had been booked in the 76th minute, received a second yellow card in stoppage time at 90+1. Cagliari finished with one red card, alongside four yellow cards; Lazio received one yellow card, shown to Pinamonti in the 84th minute.

Control versus threat

The numbers underline Lazio’s territorial control. They had 74% possession to Cagliari’s 26%, completed 658 of 746 passes, and posted an 88% pass-completion rate. Cagliari completed 195 of 263 passes at 74%.

Lazio also recorded 175 attacks compared with Cagliari’s 68, and 48 dangerous attacks to 25. Their 11 total shots edged Cagliari’s nine, with four on target against three. Lazio attempted 18 crosses and completed five, while Cagliari attempted eight and completed two.

Yet Cagliari created two big chances, one more than Lazio’s single big chance, and missed one of them. That contrast kept the scoreline tight despite Lazio’s command of possession. Both teams registered two saves, while the corner count was level at two apiece.

Standout performers

Isaksen was named Player of the Match with a rating of 7.65. His 36th-minute equaliser was the crucial response to Cagliari’s early lead and set the platform for Lazio’s late winner.

Kenneth Taylor received a 7.35 rating, while Pedraza earned 7.32 after supplying Pinamonti’s winner. Pinamonti and Oliver Provstgaard were both rated 7.21. For Cagliari, Fadera was their highest-rated player at 7.19 after assisting Nzola’s opening goal; Nzola was rated 7.10.

Lazio’s victory was built on sustained control, a first-half recovery and a bench contribution at the decisive point of the game. Cagliari led early and remained competitive through the final quarter, but Pinamonti’s header settled the contest in Lazio’s favour.
