Ayari strike and Verbruggen resilience earn Brighton 1-0 win at Manchester City
Brighton & Hove Albion left the Etihad Stadium with a 1-0 Premier League victory after Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute. Manchester City controlled much of the ball and created more volume, but Bart Verbruggen’s seven saves helped Brighton protect their early lead.
The decisive moment
Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a 1-0 away win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in Premier League round nine. The only goal arrived in the 11th minute: Yasin Ayari finished with his right foot after an assist from Maxim De Cuyper.
It proved decisive. Brighton led 1-0 at half-time and there were no further goals after the interval, leaving City unable to turn a strong statistical advantage into a result.
City had the volume, Brighton had the lead
Manchester City had 62% possession and completed 503 of 597 passes, compared with Brighton’s 280 successful passes from 362. The home side also registered 124 attacks, 63 dangerous attacks and eight corners; Brighton recorded 90 attacks, 19 dangerous attacks and two corners.
The shot figures underline City’s pressure. They attempted 21 shots to Brighton’s seven, put six on target to Brighton’s three and struck the woodwork twice. City also produced 18 key passes, 24 crosses—including 10 accurate deliveries—and five big chances.
But the decisive return was missing. City failed to score despite creating five big chances, with all five recorded as missed. Brighton created four big chances and missed three, but Ayari’s finish gave the visitors the crucial conversion.
Verbruggen’s defining contribution
Bart Verbruggen was named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.45. The Brighton goalkeeper made seven saves, a major number in a match where City put six shots on target and maintained sustained pressure.
Ayari, scorer of the winner, received a 7.73 rating. De Cuyper, who assisted the goal, was rated 7.29 before being replaced by Malick Yalcouyé in the 72nd minute. Luka Vušković posted a 7.27 rating, while Lewis Dunk was rated 7.04.
For City, Jérémy Doku was their highest-rated player at 7.76. Elliot Anderson followed on 7.46, with Abdukodir Khusanov rated 7.26. Those individual ratings accompanied a City performance that produced territory and chances but no goal.
Game management after the break
City made four substitutions, introducing Rayan Cherki in the 55th minute, Nico O’Reilly in the 64th, then Allan and Phil Foden in the 79th. Brighton used all five of their changes, with Jaouen Hadjam and Mats Wieffer entering in the 64th minute, Jack Hinshelwood and Yalcouyé in the 72nd, and Georginio Rutter in the 84th.
Brighton’s defensive numbers reflected the workload of protecting a narrow lead: 15 interceptions, 22 tackles and 15 successful tackles. They also made eight goal kicks, compared with City’s three. The visitors collected three yellow cards—Chema Andrés in the 20th minute, De Cuyper in the 49th and Pascal Groß in the 81st—while City received none.
The outcome
The result belongs to Brighton’s clinical early moment and their ability to preserve it through a long City push. City finished with more possession, shots, corners, key passes and big chances, but Brighton’s one goal remained enough. Ayari supplied the difference; Verbruggen supplied the resistance.
