Stuttgart 1-1 Atlético Madrid: Hosts’ pressure meets resilient 10-man response
Jamie Leweling gave Stuttgart a first-half lead, but Julián Alvarez struck immediately after the restart following Ademola Lookman’s introduction. Stuttgart controlled many of the attacking indicators, yet Atlético held on after Morten Hjulmand’s 64th-minute red card to leave the MHPArena with a 1-1 draw.
Match overview
VfB Stuttgart and Atlético de Madrid shared a 1-1 draw in Matchday 3 of the Champions League league stage at the MHPArena. The game was defined by two goals either side of half-time, then by Atlético’s effort to protect a point after Morten Hjulmand was sent off in the 64th minute.
Stuttgart had the larger share of possession, more attempts and substantially more dangerous attacks, but could not find a second goal. Atlético produced an immediate response to falling behind and remained level through the closing stages despite playing the final 26 minutes with 10 men.
First-half advantage for Stuttgart
Stuttgart started in a 4-2-3-1 and took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. Jamie Leweling finished with his left foot to separate the sides at the interval. It was the only goal of a first half in which Stuttgart also saw Maximilian Mittelstädt booked in the 17th minute for a foul.
The home side’s final attacking figures underline their sustained threat: 54% possession, 113 attacks, 72 dangerous attacks and 18 total shots. They also earned nine corners to Atlético’s four, delivered 29 crosses, and recorded 12 key passes.
Atlético answer straight away
Atlético made a change at the start of the second half, with Ademola Lookman replacing Jonathan David in the 46th minute. One minute later, Lookman supplied Julián Alvarez, whose left-footed finish made it 1-1.
That quick equaliser ensured Atlético converted one of their key attacking moments. The visitors finished with 10 shots and three on target, compared with Stuttgart’s 18 shots and five on target. They were also competitive in the duels, winning 50 to Stuttgart’s 43.
Red card changes the closing phase
The balance shifted again when Hjulmand received a red card for a foul in the 64th minute. Atlético then used all five substitutions, introducing Johnny Cardoso, Robin Le Normand, Obed Vargas and Alexander Sørloth after Lookman’s early arrival.
Stuttgart made four changes of their own, including Ermedin Demirovic for goalscorer Leweling in the 72nd minute, followed by late introductions for Dzenan Pejcinovic and Leo Sauer. The home side continued to produce the greater volume, creating both of the match’s two big chances, but both were recorded as missed.
Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak made four saves, while Stuttgart’s Dennis Seimen made two. Those interventions, alongside Atlético’s 123 clearances from danger against Stuttgart’s 83, illustrate the defensive workload the visitors managed after the dismissal.
Standout performers
Mittelstädt was named Player of the Match with a rating of 7.96, despite his early booking. Leweling scored Stuttgart’s goal and received a 7.54 rating. For Atlético, Alvarez’s equaliser came with a 7.44 rating, while Lookman made an immediate impact from the bench with the assist.
The result reflected Stuttgart’s stronger attacking output and Atlético’s ability to find an early second-half response before resisting late pressure with a numerical disadvantage. Both teams leave the contest with one goal and one point.
