Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur shared the points in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in round six of the Premier League season. After a goalless first half, Bryan Mbeumo gave United a 73rd-minute lead with a left-footed finish from Matheus Cunha’s assist. Tottenham, however, found a late response through Dominic Solanke, whose header from Sandro Tonali’s assist at 90+2 settled the contest.
The equaliser arrived after Spurs had been reduced to 10 men. Rodrigo Bentancur, introduced in the 66th minute, was sent off for violent conduct in the 78th. Yet Tottenham still produced the decisive late attacking moment to leave Manchester with a point.
A level contest, then a late twist
The first half ended 0-0, and the final numbers underline how closely matched the game was in several areas. Possession was split exactly 50-50, while both sides recorded 12 shots and four corners. Passing volume was also near-identical: United completed 388 of 464 passes, and Tottenham completed 385 of 460, with both teams posting an 84% completion rate.
There were nevertheless contrasting indicators in the attacking data. Tottenham registered 111 attacks to United’s 103, and 70 dangerous attacks to United’s 45. Spurs also created four big chances, compared with one for United, although they missed three of those opportunities. United, meanwhile, put four shots on target to Tottenham’s three and created 10 key passes to the visitors’ seven.
The result reflected a contest in which neither side established decisive control. United had the edge in successful duels, 61 to 48, and made 29 tackles compared with Tottenham’s 16. Spurs carried more of a dribbling threat, attempting 30 dribbles and completing 11, against United’s 15 attempts and eight successful dribbles.
Mbeumo breaks the deadlock
United made three changes on 59 minutes, bringing on Carlos Baleba, Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee. Tottenham responded with two substitutions at 66 minutes, as Bentancur and Omar Marmoush entered the match.
The breakthrough came in the 73rd minute. Mbeumo, later named Player of the Match with a rating of 7.38, converted with his left foot after Cunha supplied the assist. Cunha’s rating of 7.17 was among the strongest in the United side, while Baleba, introduced shortly before the goal, received a 7.20 rating.
Tottenham made a further double substitution a minute later, with James Maddison replacing Conor Gallagher and Micky van de Ven replacing Destiny Udogie. The game then changed sharply at 78 minutes when Bentancur was dismissed. In the same minute, Tottenham’s Jan Paul van Hecke was booked for a foul and United’s Luke Shaw was cautioned for dissent.
Spurs’ final response
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Tottenham continued to find a way back into the game. Solanke’s header in the second minute of added time restored parity, with Tonali providing the assist. Tonali finished as Tottenham’s highest-rated player at 7.33.
The late stages were punctuated by further discipline and changes. United received yellow cards for Bruno Fernandes in the 84th minute, Lisandro Martínez in the 87th, and Dalot at 90+6. Archie Gray was booked for Tottenham at 90+8. Across the match, United collected four yellow cards, while Tottenham received three yellows and Bentancur’s red.
Both teams used all five permitted substitutions. United’s final two arrived at 90+5, when Ayden Heaven replaced Shaw and Marcus Rashford came on for Cunha. Tottenham had already introduced Mateus Fernandes for Marcos Senesi in the 89th minute.
What the draw shows
The scoreline left the teams inseparable after 90 minutes plus added time: one goal each, equal possession, equal shot totals and equal corners. United will note that they led with 17 minutes of normal time remaining and held a one-player advantage after the 78th minute. Tottenham will point to their greater number of dangerous attacks and big chances, capped by Solanke’s late header to rescue the draw.
