The decisive moments

Real Madrid left Camp Nou with a 2-1 La Liga victory over Barcelona, settled by Kylian Mbappé’s second goal three minutes from the end of normal time. The away side had led through Mbappé before Barcelona responded after the interval, only for Madrid to find the final decisive action of the match.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a right-footed finish, sending Real Madrid into half-time ahead. Barcelona’s response arrived in the 61st minute: Raphinha struck with his left foot from a Pedri assist to make it 1-1.

The match remained level into its closing stages. Eduardo Camavinga entered for Bernardo Silva in the 80th minute and then assisted Mbappé’s winner in the 87th, with the Madrid forward finishing with his right foot. It completed his two-goal night and secured all three points for the visitors.

Barcelona had the volume

The overall numbers show Barcelona spending more time on the ball and producing a greater attacking volume. They recorded 62% possession, completed 569 of 640 passes at an 89% success rate, and made 139 attacks to Madrid’s 73.

Barcelona also led in dangerous attacks, 62 to 24, key passes, 18 to seven, and total shots, 18 to 10. They placed six shots on target, one more than Madrid’s five, and generated 11 attempts from inside the box compared with six for the visitors. Their six corners matched Real Madrid’s total.

Yet Madrid created the greater number of big chances, four to Barcelona’s two. Both teams missed two big chances. The result therefore underlined the difference between Barcelona’s territorial and creative volume and Madrid’s two goals from their five shots on target.

Madrid’s response at both ends

Real Madrid’s defensive and competitive figures were also prominent. They won 51 duels to Barcelona’s 43, made 14 interceptions to Barcelona’s seven, and registered 13 successful tackles from 22 attempts. Barcelona posted nine successful tackles from 16 attempts.

Andriy Lunin made five saves, while Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García made three. Madrid also blocked two shots, with Barcelona blocking six. In possession, the visitors completed 321 of 380 passes, while their longer distribution stood out: 26 successful long passes from 49 attempts, compared with Barcelona’s six from 19.

Madrid made four substitutions, as did Barcelona. Denzel Dumfries replaced Federico Valverde in the 62nd minute, while Barcelona introduced Frenkie de Jong for Fermín López in the 74th, Karim Adeyemi for Anthony Gordon in the 85th, and Gabriel Jesus for Raphinha a minute later. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Carlos Espí were also introduced in the 90+4th minute.

Individual impact

Mbappé was named Player of the Match with an 8.18 rating. His two goals were the defining contributions, and he was the only scorer to strike twice.

Raphinha scored Barcelona’s equaliser and received a 7.61 rating. Pedri supplied the assist for that goal. For Madrid, Arda Güler was rated 7.58, while Jude Bellingham and Lunin each registered 7.46. Barcelona’s Anthony Gordon received a 7.77 rating, the highest for the home team.

The match finished with three yellow cards for each side. Aurélien Tchouaméni was booked for a foul in the 46th minute; Anthony Gordon was booked for a foul in the 84th. Marc Cucurella and Mbappé were cautioned for arguments in stoppage time, while Adeyemi was booked for an argument and Alejandro Balde for a foul at 90+6.

Final word

Barcelona produced the larger share of possession, passing and shooting figures, and their equaliser set up a tense final half-hour. But Mbappé’s first-half opener and late winner gave Real Madrid the clearest outcome: a 2-1 away win at Camp Nou.
