Manchester United 4-4 Aston Villa: United salvage stoppage-time thriller at Old Trafford
Manchester United recovered from 4-2 down to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring in the 90+2nd minute and Patrick Dorgu heading in the equaliser four minutes later.
A remarkable finish
Manchester United and Aston Villa shared eight goals in an extraordinary Premier League draw at Old Trafford. Villa struck twice inside the opening four minutes, United levelled before the interval, and the visitors restored a two-goal cushion early in the second half. Yet the final word belonged to United, who scored twice in added time to turn 2-4 into 4-4.
The result reflected a match of constant momentum swings. United produced more of the attacking volume, while Villa made their early opportunities count and came within moments of leaving Manchester with all three points.
Villa's lightning opening, United's first-half response
Aston Villa were ahead after one minute when Alysson scored with a left-footed shot, assisted by John McGinn. Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage in the fourth minute with a right-footed finish.
United had a penalty under VAR review in the 14th minute, and Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot two minutes later to make it 1-2. The home side then found their equaliser in the 44th minute, when Youri Tielemans scored with his left foot from Noussair Mazraoui's assist. A VAR review followed in the 45th minute, with the goal standing on the recorded scoreline as United went into half-time level at 2-2.
Villa regain control after the restart
The second half began with another decisive Villa spell. McGinn converted a penalty in the 48th minute to put the visitors back in front, before Leon Goretzka made it 4-2 five minutes later with a left-footed finish assisted by Jackson.
United made five substitutions across the match, including the introductions of Ayden Heaven at half-time and Patrick Dorgu, Shea Lacey and Mason Mount in the 66th minute. Villa also used all five substitutes.
For much of the second half, the score remained 4-2 despite United's sustained pressure. The home side finished with 56% possession, 124 attacks and 82 dangerous attacks, compared with Villa's 71 and 33. United also registered 26 total shots to Villa's 12, putting nine on target to Villa's six.
Added-time drama
The comeback finally arrived deep into stoppage time. Joshua Zirkzee, introduced in the 83rd minute, scored with his left foot in the 90+2nd minute after an assist from Dorgu. United were still behind, but the deficit had been cut to one.
Four minutes later, Dorgu completed the recovery. The defender headed in Bruno Fernandes' delivery in the 90+6th minute to make it 4-4 and secure a dramatic point.
The late scorers were among United's highest-rated players: Dorgu received an 8.08 rating and Zirkzee 7.22. Fernandes was named Player of the Match with an 8.45 rating after scoring United's penalty and assisting the equaliser.
Numbers behind the draw
United's attacking edge was clear in several categories. They created six big chances to Villa's five, played 20 key passes to nine, won eight corners to one and completed 422 of 484 passes. Villa completed 337 of 399 passes.
However, both sides converted four times. Villa had the more efficient early spell, while United's persistence was rewarded in the final minutes. Each team scored twice in the first half and twice in the second, producing a 4-4 draw that will be remembered above all for its breathless finish.
