Jackson double lifts Aston Villa past Manchester City
Nicolas Jackson scored in the 6th and 60th minutes as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park. Erling Haaland levelled with a 52nd-minute header, but Villa protected their advantage despite City’s sustained statistical control.
The result
Aston Villa claimed a 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester City at Villa Park, turning two Nicolas Jackson finishes into three valuable points. Jackson struck early in the sixth minute and restored Villa’s lead on 60 minutes after Erling Haaland had brought City level shortly after the interval.
It was a match in which the scoreline and the statistical picture told different parts of the story. Manchester City had 63% possession, completed 472 of 528 passes and produced 15 shots, including seven on target. Aston Villa had 37% of the ball and eight shots, but their two efforts on target both became goals.
Villa seize the early initiative
Villa made the ideal start. Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a right-footed shot, with John McGinn listed as the related player for the goal. That strike gave the home side a 1-0 half-time lead.
City accumulated the larger share of attacking activity across the match: 135 attacks to Villa’s 48, and 89 dangerous attacks to 22. They also recorded 14 key passes, compared with Villa’s six, and delivered 22 crosses, nine of them accurate. Yet Villa navigated the pressure to reach the break ahead.
The discipline count was level by full time, with four yellow cards apiece. City’s Marc Guéhi and Rayan Cherki were booked in the first half, while Villa’s cautions arrived later, beginning with Johan Manzambi in the 54th minute.
City respond, Villa answer
Manchester City changed two players at the restart, introducing Phil Foden for Cherki and Rico Lewis for Guéhi in the 46th minute. Six minutes later, they had their equaliser. Haaland headed in at 52 minutes, with Iliman Ndiaye the related player, to make it 1-1.
The equaliser was consistent with City’s stronger attacking volume. They created four big chances, three more than Villa, and missed three of them. City also hit the woodwork twice and forced six saves from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
But the game’s decisive moment followed quickly. Villa introduced Ibrahim Mbaye in the 59th minute, and one minute later he was listed as the related player as Jackson scored his second with another right-footed finish. Villa were back in front at 2-1, and that proved to be the final score.
Efficiency and resistance
City finished with more shots on target, 7-2, more corners, 7-4, and more shots from inside the box, 12-6. They also completed 18 successful dribbles to Villa’s three. Villa, however, paired their finishing with a substantial defensive workload: they made 30 tackles to City’s 13, recorded 10 interceptions, and made 67 ball-safe actions.
Suzuki’s six saves were a major numerical feature of the home performance. At the other end, City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made no saves, reflecting the sharpness of Villa’s limited on-target output rather than a high volume of attempts.
Villa used all five of their substitutions, with Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendía entering in the 66th minute, before Leon Goretzka and Brian Madjo followed on 82 minutes. City made three changes in total, with Ryan McAidoo replacing Ndiaye in the 69th minute.
Standout performer
Jackson was named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.55. His two goals decided a contest in which Villa spent long periods without the ball but made their key attacking moments count. Suzuki followed with a 7.58 rating after his six saves, while Haaland was City’s highest-rated attacking contributor at 7.45 after his equalising header.
Villa’s victory came through two decisive Jackson finishes and a collective effort to preserve the lead against a City side that generated the greater share of possession, attempts and chances.
