Fenerbahçe 3-2 Liverpool: Hosts Strike Back to Win Five-Goal Champions League Thriller

Match overview

Fenerbahçe produced a rousing late comeback to beat Liverpool 3-2 at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in the fourth round of the Champions League League Stage.

Liverpool had more of the ball and more attacking volume for long periods, but Fenerbahçe made their decisive moments count. The home side equalised twice and then found the winner in the 79th minute, turning a one-goal deficit into a memorable home result.

A level first half

Trey Nyoni gave Liverpool the lead in the 25th minute with a right-footed finish. Fenerbahçe responded four minutes later, Mason Greenwood converting a free kick to make it 1-1.

That scoreline held through the interval, setting up a second half in which the contest opened up considerably. Liverpool ended the match with 68% possession, 529 passes and 475 successful passes, compared with Fenerbahçe’s 32%, 260 and 186 respectively. The visitors also recorded 114 attacks, 65 dangerous attacks and 12 corners.

Yet the key attacking numbers were closer than Liverpool’s territorial advantage suggested. Both teams created four big chances, both registered six shots on target, and both had 14 goal attempts.

Liverpool lead, Fenerbahçe respond

Liverpool made a triple change in the 66th minute, introducing Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. The impact was immediate on the scoresheet. In the 69th minute, Isak headed in from Gakpo’s assist to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

Fenerbahçe’s answer came quickly. Archie Brown, who had been booked in the 25th minute, struck with his left foot in the 73rd minute to restore parity. It was a major contribution from the defender, who was later named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.15.

The hosts completed the turnaround in the 79th minute. Vedat Muriqi, introduced for Romelu Lukaku in the 63rd minute, headed home from Brown’s assist for 3-2. It was the second headed goal of the game and the one that settled it.

Numbers behind the result

Liverpool finished with 22 total shots to Fenerbahçe’s 17 and had 19 attempts from inside the box, compared with 10 for the home side. They also completed 11 successful dribbles, made 18 key passes and delivered 11 accurate crosses from 42 attempts.

Fenerbahçe, however, competed effectively in the duels, winning 41 to Liverpool’s 40. They also won 12 tackles from 16 attempts, while Liverpool won four from seven. The home side had 11 successful headers, two more than the visitors, and their final goal came through exactly that route.

There was little between the teams in discipline: Fenerbahçe committed 13 fouls and Liverpool 12, with each side receiving one yellow card. Ederson made four saves for Fenerbahçe, while Alisson made three for Liverpool.

Standout performers

Brown’s goal, assist and Player of the Match award made him the defining individual figure. Greenwood’s first-half free-kick equaliser was Fenerbahçe’s first response, while Muriqi delivered the decisive finish after entering from the bench.

For Liverpool, Nyoni opened the scoring and recorded the visitors’ highest rating at 7.82. Isak’s introduction brought a goal, with Gakpo supplying the assist, but their 2-1 advantage lasted only four minutes before Brown levelled.

Fenerbahçe had less possession, but their late efficiency decided a match that swung repeatedly before the final whistle.
